We all know that video killed the radio star, but will it also kill the CV? With sites like
CareerTV,
Vault and
TokBok becoming increasingly popular in online networking, and with more and more video résumés/CVs being uploaded daily, is the future of recruitment really going completely paperless?
After watching my first video résumé during a session at the recent
Global ERE Expo here in Amsterdam, I have to say I wasn’t sold on the idea of the video CV (and neither was the presenter of the session, Alex Douzet from
theLadders.com, who was trying to establish Recruitment 2.0: Technology Friend or Foe?).
Nevertheless, I was all fired up to get back to the office and preview the friendlier side of video CV’s. Maybe it’s the cynical Gen X side of me or simply a diminished attention span gaining it’s foothold, but of the 10 CVs I attempted to view, not one held my attention beyond 2 minutes, and I clicked right through to the next one once I had enough of mumbled scenarios ineffectively structured around ‘why hire me?’
While I am sure out there somewhere is a stellar example of a video CV and while this vehicle may work in some markets, it is still in its infancy. When it matures, we may indeed be ready to go completely paperless, but until then, I think it’s safe to say that traditional CV has yet to be supplanted, at least by video….
Tip: video cv’s aside, CareerTV has some content worth checking out if you feel like sitting back and tuning in.
